Siskel an d Ebert once ran a special show en titled Movi es I'm Embarras sed to Admit I Liked. I suppose that if I com posed such a list of g uilty pleasures, this one would be one of them . . . but upon reflecti on, it's really a lot better than that . Fifteen yea r-old scien ce pr odigy M itch (Gabe J arret) is re cruited by ambit ious college professor William Atherton (in yet another of his pate nted roles as a loathsome character) to wo rk o n the pr ofessor's prize laser proj ect, not knowing that the prof is really developing a government weapon. Along the way, Mitch is befriended by Chris ( Val Kilmer), anot her prodigy a few years hi s senior who teaches the Mitch how to loosen up. This cou ld ha ve degenerated into nothing m ore than just another teen re venge comedy, but ther e's so much mor e the dial ogue is lace d with sharp wit; there are some lovely scen es that ha ve nothi ng to do with t he story yet are carefully set up, almost a s blackout s (e.g., Mitch goes to a lecture at which a few stud ents have l eft tape re cord ers instead of atten ding; later, at another lecture there are more tape re corders than students; and, in a fi nal scene, one large tape recorder gives the lecture to a room populate d by noth ing but other small recorders !); and throw-away scenes that make you w ant to stop and back up the tape (e.g., Ch ris off-handedly cutting a slice off a bar of sol id nitrogen to make a slug for the coff ee machine). It's a lso one of the few movies to boast the presence of the memorable Mich elle Mey erink -- as Jordan, the gi rl-nerd wh o made b eing smart and female something to be em ulated. And there's Tears for F ears g reat song, Everybody Wants to Ru le the World providing the perfect coda as the closing credits begin t o roll . . . .
