He pursues his work assisted by hi s faithful g uide dog Fr iday, his butler , Alist air, and his assistant, M arty. Retir ed actress Norm a Lawry, an old friend, comes to Mac se eking advice. Her headstr ong 17-year-old step-da ughter Barba ra, hers elf a promising actress, is enamored wit h her lea ding man in a small theater p roduct ion, the much older Lotha rio P aul Ge rente. Paul , who had once been Norma's lover, has convi nced Barbara that Nor ma actually wants Paul for herself and has only married her father Stephen for h is money. At Mac's ur ging, Norma tried to reason with Paul, but he ins ists tha t he lov es Barbara and laughs he r off. Bar bara is equa lly disdainful of her and agrees to mee t Paul for dinner that night at h is apartment . Norm a's husband Steph en Law ry is a s cientist le aving t hat night on a tr ip to test a secret invention on which he has been w orking for the government and the war effort . Worried about Barbara, she uses a pretext not t o accompany Stephe n and goes to the apartment. When Barb ara arrives, s he fin ds Paul's dead bod y and thi nks that No rma has k illed him, even th ough Nor ma insists that he was dead when she arrived. Barba ra threatens to call t he police unless she lea ves Stephen. Fearing that a scan dal will hurt him, Norma agree s. N orma then turns to Mac, who g oes to Paul 's apartment with Friday and Ma rty, onl y to find the body and the rug u nder it missing. A man arrives to rep lace the rug and Mac hides in a closet, overhearing a telephone call to Norma' s number from G abriel to Vera. Mac acc identally gives himself away, but with Friday's help o verpo wers Gabrie l, who refuses to t alk. Mac has Mar ty hide him to keep him under wraps. Norma returns to her country h ome unexpectedly, whic h discourages an es pionage ring that includes her butl er, Hansen, from breaking into Stephen 's safe and stealing his plans. T hey have kill ed Gerente , who was also an agent, and hidde n the b ody. M ac arrives with Friday at Norma's house and pr etends to be her curmudgeonly U ncle M ac who has come for a visit. His blind ness lulls any suspicions Hansen mig ht h ave about h im. Shortly thereafter, Barbara comes h ome from an emergency rehearsal, ca lled t o get her out of the house by her di rector , Cheli Scott, who inveigles an invitation to spe nd t he night at the L awry home . Unknown to Barb ara and No rma, Chel i is the ringleader of the spie s. Cheli ord ered Pau l kil led beca use his affectio n for Barbara was beginning to limit his effective ness, and she immediately suspe cts Ma c is n ot w hat he seems . Gabriel' s wife Ver a, the Lawrys' maid , is also a part of the plot. Whe n Gabriel does not r eturn home, Vera becomes hysterical with worr y. Mac secretly as ks Vera to meet him in the greenhouse, using her worry about Gabrie l as a lure. Sh e is obser ved by the others, however, and is killed by Hansen before she can reach Mac. The spies cut the hou se's telep hone wires so th at Mac and Norma cann ot call the police, and Ch eli has Mac locked up under gu ard. Using his blin dness as a distraction, Mac overpowers his gua rd and releases Friday out a window with inst ructions to go home and get Marty. Stephen a rrives home and Cheli thre atens his family if he does n ot give her th e final step in creating his invention, which was not in the safe. Barbara finally re alizes h ow much Norma actually cares for h er. Mac tries to stall for time , but is lo cked in the cellar. When Hansen goes to kill hi m, Ma c has br oken the light bulb and hi s advanta ge of total darkness helps him overcome the spy. Marty and F riday return with the police. When Friday is spo tted b y a lookout, Mac overp owers him and is saved from being shot by another l ookout by Friday. Af ter the spies are c aptured, S tephen and Norma are off to Washington, D.C., with B arbara remaining behind to care for her ne w Un cle Ma c.
